How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance primarily focuses on prevention over treating issues as they arise. That way, you don’t risk permanently losing a tooth over something as small as an untreated cavity that eventually progresses into a tooth infection. To help understand your benefits better, you’ll need to know these three basic terms:
Premium
The monthly or annual amount you pay to maintain your dental insurance coverage, regardless of whether you use it.
Deductible
The amount you must pay out of pocket each year before your insurance begins to contribute toward treatment costs.
Annual maximum
The total amount your insurance will pay toward your dental treatments within a single calendar year.

What Your Plan Typically Covers
Most dental insurance plans determine coverage based on a tiered structure. This means they cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic treatments, like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more serious procedures, like tooth extractions. However, every plan is different, so it’s important to call your insurance company to double-check your coverage before you schedule a treatment.
