Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance primarily focuses on prevention over treating issues as they arise. That way, you don’t run the risk of permanently losing a tooth over something as small as an untreated cavity that eventually progresses into a tooth infection. To help understand your benefits better, you’ll need to know these three basic terms:
- Premium: Your premium is the monthly or annual amount that you pay for your benefits.
- Deductible: The deductible is the set amount of money that your insurance requires you to pay out-of-pocket before your benefits kick in and cover treatment.
- Maximum: The maximum is a capped-off amount that your insurance will pay for your dental treatments over the course of the year.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Most dental insurance plans determine coverage based on a 100-80-50 structure. What this means is that they cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic treatments like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more serious procedures, like tooth extractions. However, every plan is different, so it’s important to call your insurance company to double-check about your coverage before you schedule a treatment.
