It’s estimated that over 30 million Americans wear dentures to eat, speak, and smile with confidence after tooth loss. But while dentures in Orlando are a great investment in your oral health, they typically need to be replaced about every 5-8 years and also need occasional adjustments and repairs to continue fitting well. But how do you know when it’s time to repair or replace your current appliance? In addition to having it evaluated at regular checkups, it’s helpful to watch for the following 4 signs of wear.
If a denture is dropped or otherwise damaged, it can easily crack or break. Even if it’s still wearable, it won’t give you the same chewing strength as before and will also be more prone to breaking again. If your denture is damaged in any way, it’s a good idea to have a dentist look it over. In some cases, a new denture may be necessary. In others, they can simply fix the damaged portion of the appliance.
After tooth loss, your jaw slowly becomes thinner and “shrinks” over time. Eventually, the denture that once fits perfectly can become loose and start to shift, making it more difficult to eat and speak comfortably. You may also notice that your dentures “slip,” during meals or conversations. In this situation, a dentist may recommend a re-line to give you a better fit, or it may be time for a new denture altogether.
Also, if you have an implant-retained denture, keep in mind that it will continue fitting well much longer because implants maintain and preserve the jawbone.
An old denture will start to show signs of age such as discoloration, a feeling of “give” in the base, or small chips and cracks. Especially if you’ve had your appliance for 4 to 5 years or more, be sure to have it looked at regularly to make sure it’s functioning well.
Sore spots on your gums or pain from chewing make it difficult to eat, and these symptoms are often the result of an ill-fitting denture. Unless your denture is quite old, a re-line will usually help it fit comfortably and snugly once again.
Dentures are a wonderful way to enjoy the benefits of a complete smile after tooth loss, but they don’t last forever. By keeping an eye out for these 4 signs of wear and maintaining your denture accordingly, you’ll have a smile that always looks and feels fantastic.
