Preventive Dentistry

Your teeth can last for a lifetime. It’s true! Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, and with proper care and regular dental visits, your teeth can easily withstand a lifetime of wear and tear. At your dental visit, Dr. Russo will show you how to optimize your oral health and how to prevent dental damage from occurring. He may recommend more frequent cleanings, fluoride to strengthen enamel, or a nightguard to curtail destructive teeth grinding. Our goal is to prevent you from needing dental reconstruction in the future!

What we can do to protect your smile:

  • Screen for oral cancer – When caught in its earliest stages, oral cancer has a 80-90% survival rate. When detected late, the survival rate is below 50%.
  • Prevent gum disease – When plaque hardens and becomes trapped below the gum line, it creates a painless infection unless it’s removed regularly by a dentist or hygienist.
  • Inspect teeth for cavities – With high-resolution digital X-rays and intraoral video photographs, we can discover small areas of decay before they grow into full-blown cavities.
  • Protect smiles from damage – Many patients grind their teeth with intensity during sleep without knowing it. Ask Dr. Russo about a custom nightguard or sportsguard to safeguard your smile.
  • Equip you with dental knowledge – The best defense against common dental threats is a well-informed patient who can make daily decisions that promote a healthy smile.

Tips for keeping your teeth in tip-top shape:

  • Avoid sugary or carbonated beverages between meals. These include regular and diet soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit juices.
  • Snack wisely. Vegetables, plain yogurt, and cheeses are excellent, teeth-friendly snacks.
  • Floss daily! As the old saying goes: You don’t have to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep!
  • Brush with a Fluoride toothpaste and use a Fluoride rinse. This mineral helps strengthen tooth enamel and ward off decay.
  • Change your toothbrush regularly. Every 3-4 months shop for a new brush with soft bristles.
Daily flossing can add 6.4 years to your life!
