It’s a new year, and for a lot of us, that means it’s time to make some changes. Like wearing sunscreen every day, or drinking green tea instead of coffee in the morning. Ok, that won’t ever happen — how about you strive for something that won’t give you headaches and caffeine withdrawals? Your dentist in Orlando has some suggestions for your new healthy smile habits in 2017.
Start out 2017 by taking a good, hard look at your oral hygiene habits. You may not like what you see — too many adults are lax on the brushing and flossing. We know, we know, sometimes you’re really tired or late for work yet again. But there’s really never a good excuse for skipping brushing and flossing.
This year, make sure you are brushing for two minutes, at least twice a day. Clean after each meal for even healthier teeth and gums. And after you have brushed your teeth at night (or before, it doesn’t really matter), make sure you don’t skip the dental floss. It’s a crucial step for removing the food particles your toothbrush leaves behind.
Make 2017 the year of water! Many people spend a good portion of the day without enough hydration. Unfortunately, a parched mouth creates a breeding ground for the bacteria that cause bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. But drinking plenty of water throughout the day washes away bacteria and also promotes saliva production for extended bacteria fighting. The next time you’re at the grocery store, invest in a reusable water bottle as a reminder to sip for your oral health.
Another trick for fighting dry mouth and promoting cavity prevention is popping a piece of sugar-free gum in your mouth after or between meals. Chewing stimulates the glands that control saliva production for fresher breath and a healthier mouth.
Eating a balanced, nutritious diet is key for enjoying a healthy body — and that includes your oral health. Calcium strengthens tooth enamel for protection against cavities, and fresh fruits and vegetables contain collagen and vitamins that promote better gum health.
